Unemployment
has been a worldwide social problem over the last ten years. It could have a huge negative effect on both
country and the citizen. This essay will
discuss the main cause and effects for unemployment and will provide some
evaluated solutions.
One cause of
unemployment is that there are not enough jobs for people. According to population growth and the older
age of retirement, there is more competition to get a job. For example one job opportunity has one
hundred candidates. So, one of the solutions
is that the age of retirement should be reduced to the age of 50. However if the age of retirement is reduced
employees will lose 15 years of salary.
Also the government or companies will need to pay the pension earlier
that the current retirement age. This
might mean they will lose money. In addition companies will lose their
experienced workers so need to think ahead in order to stay in business.
Another
factor which causes unemployment is that a significant part of the population
are not qualified. This is because the
investment in education by some governments is not enough. In this way some private organisations should
offer specialised training in creating new opportunities in skilled jobs. One drawback is that this is a long term
investment, but can afford the guarantee that people will be able to work in
these companies. Furthermore it could be
profitable because employees will be shaped according to the enterprise. Thus this is an investment in the employees
and the whole organisation.
A more
recent reason for high unemployment is due to people being replaced by
machines. So the number of jobless
people will be increased and reduced skilled hands. Training and assigning specialists such as
engineers, programmers to maintain and operate machines would help to decrease
unemployment. However training the workforce might be a huge project. Moreover the cost of training and maintenance
might be less efficient that expected. So it is worthwhile considering the
overall impact of new technology.
